The Tudor Black Bay 58 does not try to be loud. At 39mm, with a domed dial, a slim case and a quiet, vintage-inspired presence, it is a watch that rewards a second look. That is exactly why the strap matters so much. A strap that is only the right width can still make the watch look unbalanced, sit awkwardly on the wrist, or hide the very proportions that make the Black Bay 58 so wearable.
A new strap should do more than change the colour. It should follow the curve of the case, sit flat against the wrist, and suit the way you actually wear the watch — at work, at the weekend, and on the days when a leather strap is the right choice and a bracelet is not.
This guide explains how Zenio approaches a custom Black Bay 58 strap: the fit first, then the leather, the colour, and the details that make the strap yours.

Before choosing a strap, it helps to know the watch you are fitting it to. The original Black Bay 58, reference 79030N, is 39mm in diameter, about 11.9mm thick, with a 20mm lug width, a lug-to-lug of about 47.7mm, and 200 metres of water resistance. It uses Tudor's manufacture calibre MT5402, with a power reserve of about 70 hours.
Tudor has since added more versions in the same 39mm case, including a navy blue dial, a burgundy dial, a silver 925 case, and, in 2026, a slimmer black-dial version at 11.7mm thick with calibre MT5400-U. Across those versions, one detail stays the same: the lug width is 20mm.
That 20mm width is good news. It is one of the most common lug widths, so the choice of leather is wide. It is also the reason a careless choice can look wrong. With a slim 39mm case, a strap that is too thick, too stiff, or too straight at the ends will overpower the watch. A strap that is shaped to the case will disappear into the design — and let the watch do the talking.
Black Bay 58 Strap Ends — Why the Correct Size Isn't Always Enough
Have you ever fitted a strap of the correct width, only to see a gap between the strap and the case? The problem is rarely the width. Every watch has its own case shape, spring-bar position and lug geometry. If the strap ends are not shaped for that watch, the result can look unfinished, even when every measurement on paper is correct.
That is why Zenio does not start with colour. We start with the end of the strap, and with how it will meet the Black Bay 58 case.
For more on this, see our guide: Why Does a Watch Strap Still Leave a Gap Even When It's the Right Size?
Custom-Shaped Curved Strap Ends — A Seamless Fit
If you want the strap to look as if it was made for the watch, custom-shaped curved strap ends are the right choice. Zenio shapes the ends to follow the curve of the Black Bay 58 case, with internal support that holds the shape and keeps the strap close to the case.
The result is a clean, balanced line from the case to the strap, with no visible gap. It takes more time and more handwork than a straight end, and production takes longer as a result. For a watch as carefully proportioned as the Black Bay 58, that extra work is usually worth it.
Choose curved ends if you wear the watch often, if you want the most refined look, or if you have tried a standard strap before and felt that something was slightly off.
Straight Strap Ends — Simple, Practical, Versatile
Straight strap ends are simpler, and that simplicity has its own advantages. They are quicker to make, they cost less, and they work well if you like to change straps often.
A straight end will not hug the case in the same way as a curved end, but on the Black Bay 58 it can still look clean and intentional, especially with a slimmer leather such as Epsom or Pueblo, and with a taper that narrows gently toward the buckle.
Choose straight ends if you want a practical everyday strap, if you change straps with the seasons, or if you want a shorter wait for your order.
Choosing a Black Bay 58 Strap Material — What Style Do You Want to Express?
The Black Bay 58 is versatile enough to wear many leathers well. The question is not which leather is best in general, but which one matches the dial you own and the way you dress.
Matte Black Alligator — Quiet, Confident, Dressed Up
Matte black alligator is the most understated way to dress up a Black Bay 58. It suits the black-dial version perfectly, and it works just as well with the navy blue dial when you want a darker, more formal look.
Choose it for work, for evenings, and for the days when you want the watch to feel considered rather than casual. See the Alligator Watch Straps collection.
Navy Alligator — Modern, Without Losing Elegance
Navy alligator is a natural partner for the navy blue Black Bay 58, and a surprisingly good match for the black dial too. It reads as modern and calm, and it pairs easily with a navy suit, a white shirt, or a dark jacket.
If you own the navy version and want a strap that feels made for it, this is the first colour to consider.
Burgundy Alligator — Warmth for the Burgundy Dial
The burgundy-dial Black Bay 58 already has warmth in its dial. A burgundy or bordeaux alligator strap picks up that warmth without repeating it exactly. The result is a watch that looks intentional, not matched for the sake of matching.
This is a good choice if you want a strap that stands out quietly, rather than one that disappears.
Brown Pueblo Leather — Vintage, Warm, and Better with Wear
Pueblo leather is vegetable-tanned, with a soft, slightly textured surface that changes with wear. Brown Pueblo suits the vintage character of the Black Bay 58 better than almost any other leather in our workshop.
It is a good choice for the black and navy dials, for weekend wear, and for anyone who likes a strap that develops its own character over time. See the Pueblo Leather Watch Straps collection.
Black Epsom Leather — Clean, Structured, Everyday
Epsom is grained, structured and resistant to scratches and marks. In black, it gives the Black Bay 58 a clean, modern look that works every day, from the office to a weekend walk.
Choose Epsom if you want a strap that keeps its shape, needs little care, and does not compete with the watch. See the Epsom Classic Watch Straps collection.
FKM Sailcloth — For Water, Travel, and Hot Days
Leather is not the right choice for every day. Alligator and Pueblo should be kept away from water and prolonged contact with perspiration. If you swim, travel, or wear the Black Bay 58 in hot weather, a sailcloth strap in FKM is the practical answer.
It keeps the sporty character of a dive watch, it handles water well, and it lets you keep wearing the watch on the days when leather should stay at home.
Matching the Strap to Your Dial
A simple way to choose is to start with the dial:
- Black dial: matte black alligator, black Epsom, brown Pueblo, or navy alligator for a cooler contrast.
- Navy blue dial: navy alligator, matte black alligator, or brown Pueblo for a warmer, vintage contrast.
- Burgundy dial: burgundy alligator, brown Pueblo, or matte black alligator to let the dial lead.
- Silver or gold case: a darker leather — black or navy alligator — usually balances the lighter case better than a pale strap.
These are starting points, not rules. If you have a colour in mind, send us a photo of your watch. We will tell you honestly whether it will work, and suggest an alternative if it will not.
Thickness, Taper, and Comfort
A dive watch needs a strap with enough presence to balance the case, but not so much that it feels stiff. For the Black Bay 58, Zenio usually keeps the strap slim enough to sit flat, with a gentle taper from the 20mm lug toward the buckle. That taper is what makes a 39mm watch feel light on the wrist, and what lets it sit comfortably under a shirt cuff.
Your wrist size matters here too. A strap made to your measurements will sit better than a standard length, especially if your wrist is smaller or larger than average. See How to measure your watch strap before you order, and send us your measurements with your order.
Can I Reuse My Original Tudor Clasp?
It depends on the clasp. Zenio will check the attachment system and the clasp type before recommending a strap. In many cases we can craft a strap to work with your original clasp. In other cases, a Zenio buckle or a new clasp is a better fit.
Send us a photo of your watch and your clasp, along with your wrist measurements. We will guide you through the details and tell you what is possible before we start making the strap.
How to Take Care of Your Black Bay 58 Strap
Leather straps last longer when they are cared for simply and consistently. Keep alligator and Pueblo away from water, dry them gently if they get damp, and store them away from direct sunlight and heat.
